The Marble Arch Caves Geopark became a member of the Global Geoparks Network in 2004. It is located in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. The large cave system is located on the lower limestone slopes of the Cuilcagh Mountains and is one of the most significant cave systems in Britain and Ireland. Most of the caves formed within the upper Dartry Limestone Formation, a complex group of different types of limestone that vary greatly in thickness and character, reflecting increasing tectonic activity. These geological variations affect the overall cave development. In addition, the differences between the sandstones, shales and limestones account for the geodiversity and biodiversity of the area. The Marble Arch Caves provide high-quality geotourism by integrating the natural landscape and geoconservation for the long-term sustainable development of the area.
