A lava lake, also known as a magma lake, is a landscape consisting of an unconsolidated lake of magma in a crater before the eruption has finished. Lava lakes often exist in the volcanic craters of tranquil eruptions, such as in Hawaii. The presence of lava lakes greatly facilitates studies of the origin and characteristics of magma; hence, this landform has both ornamental and scientific value (Fig. 13).
