This geopark is located in Kuche County, Aksu District, Xinjiang, and was included in the fifth group of national geoparks in August 2009. The geopark is characterised by the red-sandstone canyon that formed in the Cenozoic. It is dominated by Quaternary glacial remains and yardang landforms. The geopark also boasts a ‘kuqa landscape’ that is mainly composed of red sandstone and features maze-like canyons and castle-like mountains. This landscape is composed of folded terrestrial Cenozoic conglomerates, sandstones and mudstones that have been eroded by seasonal water flows, arid climatic conditions and collapses. The park also has various glacial landforms, including dammed lakes, moraine platforms, U-shaped valleys, and diverse yardang landforms in the shape of belts and pyramids.
