This heritage site is located in the East Rift Valley of Kenya and covers a total area of 320 km2. Its outstanding features include three interconnected shallow lakes, Lake Bogogna, Lake Nakuru and Lake Elmentetta. The Lake District is home to 13 globally endangered species and is one of the richest areas for bird species in the world. It is the most important foraging ground for small flamingos as well as the nesting and breeding base for great white pelicans. The heritage area also has large populations of large mammals, such as black rhinoceroses, Rothschild giraffes, twisted antelopes, lions, cheetahs and wild dogs, which have important scientific value for studies of major ecological processes.
