This is a type of volcanic eruption named after the Katmai Volcano in Alaska. The magma viscosity is very high. The magma is usually rhyolitic, andesitic or trachytic and is characterised by the formation of a large thick hot volcanic ash flow, in which the clastic materials have various sizes and are unsorted. An example is the ash flow of the ‘Million Smoke Valley’ near Katmai Volcano, where a volcanic crater formed by the eruption of abundant magma.
