Jiuzhaigou is located at the northern foot of the Minshan Mountains in Huanglongsi, Sichuan Province. The Huanglong Scenic Area has a total area of 1,830 km2, and the Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area has an area of 720 km2. These areas are well-known for their highland karst landforms that was formed by redeposition from saturated calcareous water on the surface. Huanglongsi Valley contains more than 300 coloured tufa pools due to sedimentation from flowing water. Its travertine beaches cover an area of 80,000 km2. With its five major karst waterfalls and four karst caves, the area is a distinctive outdoor karst scenic site. Jiuzhaigou is composed of two tributaries; one flows from Goukou, Norilang to Changhai, and the other flows from Norilang to the Primitive Forest. Its six scenic areas are Changhai, Jianyan, Norilang, Shuzheng, Zaru and the Black Sea.
