This site is located in the Mediterranean Sea, 50 km north of Sicily, Italy, and has a core protected area of 12.16 km2. The Aeolian Islands are a classic example of the formation, evolution and destruction of volcanic islands. Research on the archipelago can be traced back to at least the eighteenth century and led to the identification of two typical eruption patterns in volcanology – Vulcanian and Strombolian eruptions.
