An ice sheet is also known as a continental ice cap. It is called an ice sheet when the total area is more than 50,000 km. An ice sheet is very thick and has a shield-shaped surface that flows from a central ice layer up to 2–3 km thick to the surrounding area. The ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland are typical examples (Fig. 6).
