This is a type of volcanic eruption named after the Hawaiian volcanoes, which are characterised by gentle flows of dilute basaltic or andesitic magma, usually in the form of lava flows or lava lakes. A particular characteristic is the formation of a lava fountain, and the eruption activity is weak. The lava can be blocky or rope-like, and the volcanic necks are generally filled with lava. The erupted materials include dung-like volcanic bombs and volcanic ash, and these eruptions often form shield volcanoes or parasitic volcanoes (Fig. 3).
