Gulangyu Islet was previously known as ‘Yuanshazhou’ (Round Sand Bar) or ‘Yuanzhouzai’ (Small Round Bar). It is a small island that was formed due to marine erosion of granite. It was given this name because of the sea cave in its southwestern corner, which makes a sound like a drum when impacted by waves. It faces Xiamen City across the 600-m-wide Lujiang River, which takes only 5 min to cross by ferry. It has an area of 1.87 km 2and a population of approximately 20,000. It is under the jurisdiction of the Xiamen Municipal District. This island has a pleasant climate like spring for the entire year. It is quiet with no vehicles on the island, so it is also called the ‘Sea Garden’. The main tourist attractions are Riguang (Sunshine) Rock (a spherical weathered granite rock), Shuzhuang Garden, Haoyue (Bright Moon) Garden, Yu Garden, Circuit Island Road, Gulang (Drum Wave) Rock, museums, the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall, Marine World and natural beaches.
