With the combustion of fossil fuels, the sulphur dioxide and nitrogen hydrides that are discharged into the atmosphere will transform into sulphuric and nitric acids. When these acids combine with rain and snow, the precipitation becomes acidic (less than 5.6 pH). Acid rain can cause the acidification of soil, corrosion of buildings, and endanger animals, plants and human health.
