On Civic Education and Education for Peace

A day doesn’t pass, it often seems, free of being cast into dark reflections on the state of our world, stirring unsettled worries about the precariousness of democratic citizenship and peaceful resolution of conflicts. Educators are at the center of such precariousness, caught up belatedly, in Hannah Arendt’s terms, between past and future (1993). The weight of the world threatens the necessary security required for our classroom walls. Yet we are bound by our responsibilities as teachers compelled to push back against conditions that can disrupt and limit the development of capabilities and the courage required by our students to live peaceful and productive lives. School teachers and teacher educators are, or ought to be, driven by what Jonathan Lear (2006) names as a “radical hope” in nurturing possibilities for our students to be endowed with capacities to shape a future that is not determined in advance or foreclosed by doom.
