Pedagogy of Aloha

Introduction

Pedagogy of Aloha is a culturally driven, research-based Hawaiian way of teaching and learning that evolved over the past 35 years alongside a Hawaiian Renaissance. This pedagogy has successfully improved educational outcomes for tens of thousands of PK-12 and adult learners. Pedagogy of Aloha is grounded in the value of aloha, the Hawaiian word for love, affection, compassion, caring, and kindness. For Hawaiians, exhibiting aloha is an inherent responsibility to each other, the environment, and the spiritual world, since in Hawaiian thinking, all are interconnected and rely on each other for mutual support. Moreover, aloha constitutes a reciprocal process as reflected in the proverb: “When love is given, love should be returned; anger is the thing that gives no life.” Pedagogy of Aloha purports that education as well must be a reciprocal process where all are teachers and learners growing together in an atmosphere of aloha.
