Introduction
Mathematics teachers are considered here to be teachers who teach mathematics to students in kindergarten to grade 12. They could be elementary school teachers without strong mathematics background or high school teachers with university degrees in mathematics or mathematics-related subjects such as engineering or physics. However, while knowledge of mathematics is necessary, it is not sufficient to teach it effectively. Similarly, knowledge of higher levels of mathematics by itself does not correlate with effective teaching or higher students’ achievement. Mathematics teachers need specialized knowledge for teaching that could be challenging to develop and implement when it requires them to teach in ways they did not experience as learners of mathematics.
