Technology Teacher Education: Issues

Initial teacher education (ITE) is critical to the implementation and success of any discipline or learning area. While achieving “quality” teacher education might appear relatively straightforward, for the discipline of technology education (variously called technology and engineering education or design and technology education), it is highly problematic. Although technology education is generally well-established as a school subject or learning area in many countries, it is still seen as still the “new kid on the block.” As a discipline it is frequently misunderstood and lacks the status of the core traditional subjects such as science, mathematics, and social science. The ramifications of this for technology teacher education are outlined in this entry.
