Definition
Multistage vectors are multiparticle, multifunctional vectors strategically envisioned to overcome abundant obstacles encountered by drug delivery vectors as they journey from the site of administration to the target site. These vectors are comprised of layers of particles, with secondary nanoparticles and active agents nested into first-stage porous silicon microparticles. The ability to achieve sequential targeting through particle optimization enhances the probability of reaching the appropriate cellular or subcellular target within a lesion with the appropriate drug. Multistage vectors are a subset of Logic-Embedded Vectors (LEVs) [1]. By definition, LEVs are vectors with the ability to perform a time sequence of functions through the use of multiple nano-based components that synergistically provide distinct functionalities.
