Gender ideologies are defined as views that people hold regarding gender roles (Davis & Greenstein, 2009). Gender ideologies exist on a continuum with traditional gender ideologies at one end of the continuum and egalitarian gender ideologies at the other end of the continuum. People can hold gender ideologies at any point along this continuum with some people holding very egalitarian gender ideologies, some holding somewhat egalitarian gender ideologies, and so forth. People holding traditional gender ideologies believe in a “traditional” division of labor, with men performing the role of breadwinners and women performing the role of caretakers of the home. Gender ideologies have important implications for people’s well-being and quality of life, as they help to shape the division of household labor, how people feel about the division of household labor, and how people are impacted by conflicts between work and family.
