A committed researcher and sociologist, Paul Bernard (1945–2011) dedicated his professional life to reducing social inequalities and improving the quality of life for Canadians. Very early in his career, he became aware of the need to understand the complex interactions between the many factors affecting individuals throughout their lives. To achieve this, he believed that it was necessary to collect detailed information about individual life pathways, to develop theoretical and statistical tools to analyze and interpret this information, and to ensure that public policy integrated the research results by presenting them in a comprehensible way.
