Ludwig Prandtl (∗February 4, 1875, in Freising, Germany; †August 15, 1953, in Göttingen, Germany) was an engineer with contributions to aerodynamics but also to solid mechanics, especially the theory of plasticity.
Early Years and Education
With respect to the illness of his mother, Ludwig Prandtl spent more time with his father Alexander Prandtl, a professor at the Agricultural College Weihenstephan in Freising. His father motivated him to observe nature and reflect these observations. From 1894 Ludwig Prandtl studied mechanical engineering at the Technische Hochschule Munich. After graduating, he remained as an assistant of August Föppl (who later became his father-in-law) and carried out his doctoral work on “Lateral buckling phenomena. A case of unstable elastic equilibrium.” In 1900, he graduated at the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich. For a short period, he went into the industry at MAN in Nuremberg, where he first came into contact with fluid mechanics research.
