This symptom of the leishmaniasis was first described in 1886 in troopers by the Austrian Army physician Alois Pick and called it “Hundskrankheit” = dog’s disease, since he saw similar symptoms in dogs. It took until 1907, when Giovanni Battista Grassi discovered in Italy the vector of the agent of the disease (first described by  Leishman and  Donovan). Grassi called this sandfly Phlebotomus pappatasii. Since then the fever was also called Pappatasi fever, Pappataci (Papataci) fever, Phlebotomus fever, Dalmatia fever, Chitral fever, Karimabad fever or even Pick fever.
