This species belongs to the group of heterophyid trematodes and is found in Japan, Taiwan, China, Korea, in a wide range of wild and domestic animals, but in considerable numbers also in humans. First intermediate hosts are fresh water snails of the genus Semisulcospira, second intermediate hosts (with metacercariae) are fresh water fish, where the gills are entered by the cercariae within 1–5 min. Final hosts are fish eating mammals.
