English microbiologist and specialist for spirochaetes/leptospires, which were at first claimed to be the agents of the yellow fever. During his investigations of the suggested vectors (tiger mosquitoes of the genus Aedes) he died from the yellow fever. He proved that the leptospires are not the initiators of yellow fever, but that the Aedes must contain the, at this time unknown, final agent.
