Abstract

In 1844 Marx distinguishes a ‘non-alienated’ and an ‘alienated’ way in which humans may conceive themselves as members of their own species and consequently may conceive and produce for each other, the former giving rise to voluntary mutual production and the latter giving rise to private property exchange. These two modes of conceiving and relating to each other can be interpreted in terms of contrasting kinds of recognition: ‘human’ and ‘proprietorial’. In Marx’s post-1844 writings, an ‘actional’ form of proprietorial recognition is constitutive of his core concepts of social relations of production, the commodity and capital, while the idea of human recognition continues to inform his vision of communism.
