Desmosomes

These are spotlike dense plaques mostly found in epithelial cells. Intercellular adhesion in the desmosomes is mediated by desmocollins and desmogleins (adhesion molecules, members of the cadherin family) which are cytoplasmically linked to the intermediate filaments. Desmosomes are crucial to withstand the tensile and shearing forces to which tissues like epithelia are subjected.
