Microfiltration is a physical separation process that uses porous membranes with an average pore size between 0.1 and 10 μm. It promotes the separation of particles and dissolved components from fluids by a sieving mechanism, based on size exclusion. The principle of microfiltration is depicted in Fig.
1. The membrane separating a feed solution from a permeate or filtrate has a symmetric or asymmetric porous structure.
