Medical Education: General Concepts and Strategies

Profession education has a long tradition, yet only during the last decades educational theories and strategies have emerged. To improve educational curricula and with educational programs, adult learning concepts need to be understood and programs primarily based on learners’ needs should be developed. In this chapter, we shall discuss the elementary principles of andragogy (or adult learning) including practical theories such as Kolb’s cycle of experiential learning and Bloom’s taxonomy.

Academic discipline concerning the education and learning of adults.


Short for “application,” which is the same thing as a software program. While an app may refer to a program for any hardware platform, it is most often used to describe programs for mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

High-fidelity simulation

In simulation, fidelity is referred as the similitude between the simulation and reality. Higher fidelity means a simulation that is experienced almost as reality.


A multimedia file such as an audio or video that can be downloaded or streamed from the Internet onto a computer or mobile device.


An interactive seminar or conference conducted over the Internet.


A wiki is a Web site that allows users to add and update content on the site using their own Web browser. This is made possible by wiki software that runs on the Web server. Wikis end up being created mainly by a collaborative effort of the site visitors.
