Definition

It is the term used to describe the multimeric cytoplasmic complex that forms when cytochrome c is released from mitochondria into the cytosol and binds to apoptosis protein-activating factor 1 (Apaf1), dATP, and initiator caspases such as caspase 9. The apoptosome plays a key role in the activation of apoptosis.
