Definition
The term “endogenous opioid” represents any substance produced by the body (to date these are all peptides) that interacts with opioid receptors. Three genes encoding a range of endogenous opioid peptides have been identified: pro-opiomelanocortin, preproenkephalin, and prodynorphin.
