Definition

Putamen is a part of the striatum, a component of the basal ganglia, which receives afferents from motor and somatosensory cortical areas, substantia nigra, and the centromedian thalamic nucleus. It projects efferents to the globus pallidus, which in turn projects to the thalamus and to cortical motor areas.
