Corporate actors have only very recently started to fully recognize the importance that water exerts on their activities and to fully realize the pressure posed by water use on the physical environment. This increased awareness is partly due to the increasing competition among enterprises for water on the one hand and the various other risks (and opportunities) caused by global water scarcity on the other, which may have a real impact on their business. Furthermore, other factors, such as the emergence of public engagement in water policy, water privatization, and the attention paid by the mass media to the global water crisis, are also playing a significant role. Water social corporate responsibility can be defined as the – voluntary – corporate response to all these water-related issues. Such actions follow three main directions.
