Definition

An aromatic hydrocarbon is a cyclic hydrocarbon where the series of saturated and unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds satisfies Hückel’s rules, i.e., where the number of electrons in double and triple bonds in the ring is 4n + 2, where n = 0 or any positive integer. The name derives from the fact that the first such molecules discovered tended to have an aromatic odor. They are typically somewhat more stable than their hydrogen-saturated analogues. Aromatic hydrocarbons may be monocyclic or polycyclic.
