Sarcocystis species, which are common in a wide range of mammals and birds, are rather rare in ectothermian species. Cysts of S. species, S. gongyli, S. mitrani, and S. schneideri are observed in the muscles of species of the lizard family Scincidae (intermediate hosts) and in final hosts such as snakes.
