This pinworm species, which belongs like 17 other species to the genus Trypanoxyuris, has been described to induce mass infections in nonhuman primates in zoological gardens by constant autoinfections, which may cause chronic diarrheas associated with pruritus ani and indirect behavioral problems. A related species (T. microon) affects owl monkeys (Aotus nancymae).
