The knowledge on Trypanosoma species of reptiles is rather poor compared to that on Trypanosoma species of cattle, horses, humans, birds, etc. Many species (e.g., T. butantanense, T. varani, T. salamante, T. phylodriasi) had been described in their reptile hosts; however, the life cycles remained mainly in the dark. Phylogenetic analyses of species from snakes showed similarities to those of lizards. Thus the newly described species T. serpentis from the snakes Pseudoboa nigra and T. cascavelli from Crotalus durissus/terrificus belong to the lizard/snake clade too. However, vectors are mostly unknown but are surely different, when final hosts live in water or in land biotopes.
