Name: Greek: tainia = tape. Latin: asiaticus = belonging to/coming from Asia.
- 2.
Geographic distribution/epidemiology: East Asia.

Morphology/life cycle: This species looks morphologically similar to T. solium except for the fact that the scolex possesses only remnants of hooks. Its life cycle runs similarly to that of T. solium , while molecular biological investigation showed close relations to Taenia saginata . Main intermediate hosts are pigs; however, cysticerci had also been found in muscles of goats, bears, monkeys, dogs, and even in cattle. However, infections of humans are apparently successful, if cysticerci within the meat of pigs and cattle (!) were ingested. The adult worms reach in humans a length of 4–8 m; the cysticerci are found in the liver of pigs and rarely cattle.

Symptoms of disease: Similar to those after infections with T. solium .
- 5.
Diagnosis: Infected persons excrete typical Taenia proglottids. Since eggs are typical for all Taeniaspecies, species...
