Greek: pneuma = air, nyssein = bite.
This canine nasal mite ( Pneumonyssus caninum, Fig. 1) reaches a length of 1.5 mm, appears yellowish-brown, and moves rapidly in the nostril system of dogs in North America, South Africa, Australia, and Europe. Symptoms: coughing, sneezing, and waterous excretions of the nose. A similar species in monkeys is P. simicola.
