Definition

Benign tumor of salivary gland origin that consists of epithelial, mesenchymal (myoepithelial), and stromal components arising from the minor salivary gland rest within the parapharyngeal space (PPS) or extending from the deep lobe of the parotid gland.

Basic Characteristics

Salivary gland tumors are the most common intrinsic tumors of the prestyloid parapharyngeal space representing approximately 40–50% of all primary parapharyngeal space masses. The majority of those are benign pleomorphic adenomas (Shin et al. 2001; Tom et al. 1991). Overall, pleomorphic adenoma is the most common tumor of the prestyloid parapharyngeal space. It accounts for approximately 80–90% of tumors arising from the minor salivary gland rest intrinsic to the parapharyngeal space or originating from the deep lobe of the parotid gland and extending into the parapharyngeal space (Som and Curtin 1995; Som and Curtin 2003). Pleomorphic adenomas can be...
