The field of intensive care medicine rapidly moves forward with growing numbers of patients surviving critical illness. Ultimately, patients surviving critical illness are transferred to other ward areas. Depending on individual patient needs and local policies (and/or availabilities), intensive care unit (ICU) patients are transferred to general care areas (“the floor”), higher acuity step-down units or progressive care departments.
