(Advisory board which recommends to local authorities the designation of historic buildings and districts; in U.S., a local government body created by local ordinance to review application by property owners to change, demolish, or move a locally designated historic landmark or a building within a locally designated historic district. Decisions by a commission are in the form of a “Certificate of Appropriateness”, issuance of which is a condition precedent to the granting of other required permits such as a building, zoning, or occupancy permits.
