observation, the red flames from lithium and strontium salts which when seen through a prism, show a different bright-line spectrum particular to each one. Caused by the emission spectrum, bright lines on a dark background, the emission and absorption spectra of gemstones are characteristics. They serve to identify the elements present in a material, as they exist in different positions showing different bright lines in the spectrum, for different elements at any chemical combinations. Also called  bright-line method or  bright-line technique.  Fraunhofer lines.
