Swedish botanist Daniel Solander (1733–1782) joined James Cook {see planet (3061)} on the Endeavour, the ship that was sent by the Royal Society to the South Seas to observe the June 1769 transit of Venus. During this voyage he collected about a thousand different species of plants, none of which was then known in Europe. (M 54826)
