Optimizing Outputs of Nigerian Research Institutes to Achieve National Food Security in the Face of Climate Change

Abstract

Food security is described as a situation when all people at all times have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preference for an active healthy life. For food to be produced, the agricultural environment must be conducive to plants, animals, microbes, and people living in it. Climate change is sharply bringing variation in physical, structural, occupational, agricultural, biodiversity, and socioeconomic ways of life. The interaction between man and his environment is grossly responsible for the global warming and climate change. The effect is currently reversing the old order of things with respect to amount and distribution of precipitation, occurrence, and severity of drought, flood, and natural hazards. Earlier knowledge of geographical principles is no longer completely reliable, thereby posing a serious threat to survival of man, live stocks, fisheries, and wild life. Green house emission of carbon dioxide, heat and depletion of ozone layer, and carelessness of man in his environment could be blamed for these consequences. Since man cannot bring back to normal the damage done by fiat, he must accept whatever the climate change is offering mankind. The survival and coping strategies should therefore be holistically approached, conscientiously executed, and collectively adhered to by all inhabitants of the planet earth. In this chapter, the effect of climate change on food distribution, expectation from farmers, research institutes, government, and relevant stakeholders are discussed for enhanced food supply, food security, and industrial growth for a better economy. The potentials of some national research institutes in achieving food security are highlighted.
