Ecological Limits: Implications for Sustainable Human Capital Development

Abstract

The ecosystem is designed to depict the interaction between the natural environment and the human economy. However, an increase in socioeconomic activities has resulted in the recent upheavals of pollution, environmental degradation, and climate change. Therefore, based on the concept of limits to growth and following the ecological theory of growth, this study examines the extent to which the ecosystem can tolerate infiltration beyond which there will be adverse impacts for sustainability in human capital development. Using time series data spanning from 1970 to 2014 in Nigeria, and the breakpoint test for analysis, the threshold value occurs at the point where the environmental polluting rate is 6 kt of CO2 emissions intensity (kg per kg of energy used). This breakpoint estimate depicts the region beyond which human capital development becomes endangered and probably extinct.
