Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development: Lessons for Nigeria

Abstract

Climate change is caused by human activity through the enhancing of the greenhouse gas emission and has grave consequences on natural and human systems on all continents and across the oceans. The warming trend of the Earth’s atmosphere started with the industrial revolution and has now become a serious concern and complex global problem especially in developing countries that are the least responsible for climate change, yet the most at risk because of their inability to tackle the scourge. The world needs to make progress on many fronts including development and transfer of green technologies, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and the establishment of effective policies. However, education, training, and awareness creation are equally of importance to creating an informed and knowledgeable workforce. This chapter scrutinizes climate change education and awareness creation as important tools toward achieving sustainable development and lessons for Nigeria as a developing country that is vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The chapter revealed that Nigeria lags behind in this sphere of development as efforts so far laid have yet to gain significant response. In the midst of other countries progress has been made toward helping the general public especially the next generation to understand and relate to the issues, make lifestyle changes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and adapt to the changing local conditions. The chapter recommends that innovative educational approaches should be provided if we aim to have an audience that will understand, address, mitigate, and adapt to the impacts of climate change, which will put our world on a more sustainable development path and will build a generation that is climate aware thereby strengthening capacity for appropriate response strategy.
