Sustainable Urbanization in Africa: The Critical Enablers and Disablers

A complex process that refers to the increase in the urban population through natural population growth and rural–urban migration, as well as the spatial extent of urban space through shifts in urban boundaries, resulting in the increase in existing physical space, demarcated as an urban area.

Sustainable urbanization

It refers to the urbanization process through which the quality of life of urban citizens is improved to such an extent that equity prevails over access to services in the city, its employment opportunities, access to water, sanitation, housing, and land. Moreover, the environment remains uncompromised, while there is enhancement to human survival.


A continent with over 50 countries, well endowed with natural resources such as mineral ore, wildlife, fisheries, fertile soils for agriculture, and a youthful population, yet characterized by being part of the Global South or developing world plagued by a plethora of socioeconomic and political...
