Definitions

Green infrastructure (GI) is a term that is evolving in meaning (Austin 2014). In general, GI can be defined as an interconnected green space network that incorporates natural areas and open spaces to provide multiple benefits for people and wildlife (e.g. regional parks, nature preserves, river corridors, greenways, and wetlands) (Benedict and McMahon 2006). GI has its origin in two fundamental initiatives: (1) protecting and linking parks and other green spaces for the benefit of people (recreation, health, aesthetics, and urban design) and (2) preserving and linking natural areas to benefit biodiversity and counter habitat fragmentation (protecting native plants, animals, natural processes, and ecosystems) (Benedict and McMahon 2006).
