Overview

The “Health and Aging in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community in South Africa” (HAALSI) is a population-based community observational study of older adults living in the Agincourt subdistrict of Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The HAALSI study is led by the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies in partnership with Witwatersrand University. Wits University’s Medical Research Council/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit has been running the Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance System since 1992, and is part of the INDEPTH network of surveillance sites around the world. The HAALSI cohort is embedded within the Agincourt INDEPTH surveillance site.
