Definition

Fibrinous pleuritis refers to a fibrinous inflammation of the pleura frequently accompanied by serous and sometimes sanguineous effusion in the pleural cavity and ending up with fibrosis of the pleura through organization of the inflammatory exudates. A wide range of etiologic factors or underlying conditions concerns this type of inflammation, which includes collagen vascular disease, exposure to mineral dust (asbestos and silicates), drugs and other iatrogenic conditions, uremia, pneumothorax, and secondary to pulmonary infection and infarction.

Organization of the fibrinous exudate occurs with infiltration of the inflammatory cells (lymphocytes, macrophages) and ingrowth of fibroblasts and blood vessels and eventually gives rise to collagenization of the pleura (fibrous pleuritis), which frequently causes fibrous adhesion of both parietal and visceral...
