Definition

Epithelial mesothelioma is a histologic type of malignant mesothelioma and is characterized by the presence of “epithelioid” cells, i.e., large polygonal cells with ample eosinophilic cytoplasm. Malignant mesotheliomas in general are the most common primary malignant neoplasm of the serosal membranes, and the epithelial type is the most common, comprising about 80% of the three recognized types of mesothelioma, epithelial, sarcomatoid, and biphasic. Asbestos exposure, radiation therapy, simian virus 40, and genetic susceptibility have been identified as risk factors for malignant mesothelioma. However, no data are available regarding the risk factors for epithelial mesothelioma over the other types.
