Abstract
Over the last few decades, the worldwide growth in industrial activity has resulted in the discharge of significant pollutant quantities in the aquatic environment. These contaminants are generally characterized by their toxicity for living organisms and the environment. In response to these dangers, environmental regulations are imposing limitations on a wide variety of pollutants within industrial wastewaters. The great diversity of raw materials and production operations employed by industries poses a matter of concern for scientific community attempting to define proficient control technologies. Biological treatment technologies were viewed as attractive alternatives to conventional methods. Indeed, biofilm-mediated processes for industrial wastewater treatment are among the most proficient technologies due to their distinct advantages over conventional methods. Biofilm mode proved its capacity to enhance the overall pollutant degradation efficiency. Expanding the knowledge regarding biofilm wastewater treatment would contribute to its full-scale use. This chapter presents an overview of the beneficial use of biofilm mode in depollution technologies and a critical discussion of a relevant number of recent investigations that have dealt with biofilm-based processes. It also provides a review of the various types of bioreactors and biofilm supports currently used.
